WW2 German Waffen SS,
Oberschütze, Sturmpionier, Eastern Front 1943
This is my custom SS Sturmpionier equipped with a Flammenwerfer 41.
I really took me a while to complete this custom – it was a project started mid 2006. Nevertheless, I have no regrets cos I am really satisfied with the end results. My time was spent looking for references, trying to figure out how the harness work and finding the best replacement for the hose for the Flammenwerfer 41.
Lots of work was put into improving DML's flamethrower. This includes taking apart DML's flamethrower and putting it back again. As I was improving the cylinder containers (filling up the gap line) I decided to create copies of the pieces i improved in resin to fistly give weight to the cylinders and build inventory for my future projects. This flamethrower does weigh a bit - but nothing comparing to the real thing - 22kg! DML's hose was replaced with a metal wire netted hose (you should have seen my face when I found this item). The harness was scratch built.
The base is my standard 4" x 4" x 3" polished resin block. Groundwork was added. I used Silfor Grass to create the tufts of grass. I added a metal plate with etched Waffen SS logo. This metal plate was painted and weathered too!
The details on my improvements are :-
- Flammenwerfer 41 - detailed, painted and with scratch built harness
- M40 Helmet with Plane Tree pattern Helmet cover
- Weathered Coverall
- Self made Toque
- Improved and weathered Jack boots
- Stick grenade – created wood grain on wooden handle, repainted
- Modified Body (slim)
- Repainted head sculpt with neck modification using a ball joint fixture
- Bendy hands with mittens
- Display base with a SS Metal Plaque
